Joe Yiu's Work

After consultation with our tutor, I found that there are some drawbacks of the artist and artwork I chose.

Therefore I decided to do some research again and choose a new artist to investigate.
Finally I chose Ms Joe Yiu. I saw her artwork when I visited 'It Takes Four Sorts' Exhibition.

Joe Yiu completed MA in Fine Arts study at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2011, she has worked on various initiatives including those related to upcycling and culture of demonstration.

Joe attempt to reveal ridiculous phenomena in the highly urbanized Hong Kong in most of her works. Aiming to provide a critical perspective in reading the city, she is interested in discovering hidden orders in public space.

Research findings & Interview questions

Milton Wong graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He loves drawing graphics and trickart. Last year, he was invited by Disney to make a 5.5 feet Wire Mickey Mouse, which was displayed in TImes Square, Hong Kong.

Theme: Disney Mickey Mouse
Form: Installation Art
Medium: Wires
Cultural Background: 60 years anniversary of Mickey Mouse
Social Background: Mickey Mouse is a character that is so famous and deep rooted in many people's mind. No one expected to see a wire Mickey but he did this time. It breaks the rules of a cute and soft Mickey Mouse.
My interpretation: I went there to visit his work at that time. It is amazing since I never saw Mickey Mouse in wires and it is really big. I think he gave Mickey Mouse a new feeling and meaning. Mickey is not must to be cute, but also can be cool. The lines of wires are so complicated that you can feel how many planning and design are inside.

Interview Questions:
1. What was your major in PolyU design?
2. Why you choose wires as your materials?
3. What is the special point of wires? any constraints when using it?
4. How much time you used to finish the artwork?
5. What is whole process of generating the ideas and design?
6. Is there any meaning behind your work?

7. Do you like Mickey Mouse before you start your work? Any difference after that?
8. What research you did before you start your work?
9. What supports did Disney give when you are doing your work?
